The 3rd Pioneers of Modern Spanish Architecture National Congress, held in Madrid in May 2016 under the title “Critical Analysis of a Work of Architecture”, delves into emblematic and lesser-known works by the great architects of the modern movement in Spain, taking advantage of the perspective afforded by the passage of time to define the values, criteria and strategies underlying their ways of conceiving, designing and building.
The twelve selected papers are grouped into four sessions according to their analytical approach: the first, chaired by Santiago de Molina, highlights the importance of the location in the design process; the second, chaired by Carlos Labarta, addresses three works by Sáenz de Oíza, Alejandro de la Sota and Miguel Fisac in which essence and the expression of matter guide the project; the third, chaired by David Cohn, brings together works articulated in functional, flexible volumes adaptable to change; and the fourth, chaired by Cristina Gastón, underlines constructive sincerity and the clear intentionality in the choice of each element. Three of the twelve papers study projects by Alejandro de la Sota.
This bilingual publication compiles the twelve papers along with the articles by the moderators of the four debates and the list of contributions published in the digital proceedings of the Congress.
