Taku Sakaushi. Unfolding architecture
Unfolding Architecture 2001-2021, edited by Enric Massip-Bosch and published in the TC Prospectiva series, explores two decades of work by Japanese architect Taku Sakaushi.
This volume details his approach to architecture as a means of interaction between space and people—a theme Sakaushi addresses with an innovative vision, especially through his reinterpretation of windows. His concept of the "ribbon window," extending horizontally and vertically, activates the user's peripheral perception, subtly connecting the interior with the exterior and the space with sensory experience.
Influenced by architects like Kazuo Shinohara and Charles Moore, Sakaushi combines formal clarity with tactile textures, creating spaces that invite movement and a physical response from the user. Projects such as his own residence in Tokyo highlight this interaction, where stairs and walls arranged at unconventional angles evoke an almost musical rhythm, guiding circulation and stimulating perception of his architecture as a living framework for human activity.
Additionally, in industrial works like the Re-Tem Factory in Tokyo, Sakaushi implements accessible and educational design, integrating recycling technology visible to the public and using vibrant lighting that transforms the building into an experience of discovery.
