EB 21- Restoring with Concrete
En Blanco 21. Rehabilitating with Concrete addresses interventions on existing architecture from a contemporary perspective, understanding rehabilitation not only as an act of preservation but also as an opportunity to reinterpret the past through design. In this context, concrete emerges as a material particularly capable of establishing a precise dialogue between the new and the existing, whether through contrast, continuity, or adaptation.
The issue brings together a selection of works in which this relationship becomes especially visible, such as the intervention in the Roman Temple of Diana in Mérida, the Convent of Sant Francesc in Santpedor, the Thalia Theatre in Lisbon, and the cultural center El Molino in Utebo. Through these projects, the magazine presents different strategies for working with heritage, ranging from contemporary insertions to the transformation of historical or industrial structures.
Alongside these projects, the interview with Juan Carlos Arnuncio and the critical essays included in the volume broaden the reflection on the relationship between rehabilitation, modernity, and construction. The result is an issue that explores the potential of concrete as a tool for architectural intervention and as a means to rethink, from the present, the continuity of architecture over time.
