EB 21- Restoring with Concrete
If constructing is inventing, when rehabilitating we take the past as a support for the invention.
The projects presented in this issue of the journal EN BLANCO are characterised by the condition of mediating between a historical past and the present. In our case, the existing buildings come from very different periods: from the Roman Antiquity at Merida, in the vicinity of the Temple of Diana, up to the 19th century at the Thalia Theatre in Lisbon and at the industrial architecture of Utebo’s Mill.
Between them, the 18th century appears at the architecture of the Franciscan convent of Santpedor.
The recovery of these buildings, located on different contexts of the Iberian Peninsula, has required an update of their original programs. Thus the Church of Sant Francesc becomes an auditorium and the Thalia Theatre, a multifunctional space where the remains of the ancient theatre will be part of the new show –as mentioned by the authors in the project report. Perhaps the greatest functional transformation is the one at the Mill in Utebo. It evolves from a producing space to a container, assuming the difficult task of bringing culture to the neighbours.
With a variety of types and of times, the previous projects establish a relationship with contemporaneity, using concrete as a material. Old and new are clearly differentiated from the various constructive systems that the technology of concrete allows to develop.
