EB 20- Víctor López Cotelo
Conversion of the former Military Hospital in Granada into a School of Architecture
Victor López Cotelo has received the Spanish Architecture Award 2015 for the conversion of the former Military Hospital in Granada into a School of Architecture.
The award, the highest honour awarded by the Superior Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain has been unanimously granted, for the first time and significantly, to a building that is not newly-designed.
This issue explains the entire project with plans, details and photos of the process and result.
Little presentation does Cotelo need at this point. So I would just like to highlight the exceptionality and frontier condition –halfway between Spain and Germany– of an architect who combines the profession and teaching to produce a work of enormous interest, often intervening brilliantly in the built heritage.
He is indifferent to the media glamour that generates flashy icons. Cotelo has created in recent decades a particular Zeitgeist in which his restoration projects of our architectural heritage stand out, either this architecture was originally an industry, hospital or palace, either it had a great monumental value or a modest character, either it was well preserved or mere remains ruined by neglect.
A restoration that has involved the implementation of new functions, always different from the original, which have transformed and revitalized architecture.
