Lopez Cotelo

Victor López Cotelo

Víctor López Cotelo (Madrid, 1947) is one of the Spanish architects whose work has consistently explored the relationship between contemporary architecture and the built heritage. Developed between Spain and Germany, his professional trajectory is characterized by a rigorous approach to architectural design and by a particular interest in interventions on existing buildings.

Educated at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid and later professor at the Technische Universität München, López Cotelo has developed an architectural practice grounded in constructive precision, spatial clarity, and a careful reading of historical context. His projects demonstrate how contemporary architecture can engage with inherited structures without resorting either to imitation or excessive contrast, but rather through a constructive logic that integrates past and present.

Among his most recognized works is the transformation of the former Military Hospital of Campo del Príncipe in Granada into the city’s new School of Architecture, a project awarded the 2015 Spanish Architecture Prize. The intervention reflects many of the central concerns in his work: the reinterpretation of historical buildings, the introduction of new structural systems, and the adaptation of existing architecture to contemporary uses.

The work of Víctor López Cotelo has been widely published and studied, and represents an important contribution to the debate on architectural rehabilitation and the continuity of architecture over time.
