The third project in the capital of Vizcaya will be on its fi nal stages by the time this report is printed. It is located in the city centre, opposite San Antón bridge in Bilbao la Vieja (old Bilbao), at the exact point where the St. James’ Way used to bend. Occasionally, the optimism in architecture originates with the feeling of good fortune due to the opportunities during one’s life.

This is the case. The possibility of a design with two facades facing each other in a newly open street within an old quarter of the city; the opportunity to choose volumes and depict an extremely sloping street as an extension of the historic bridge of San Antón...

Those represented thriving challenges; a project which is divided into two parts and whose rear parts are determined by complex shapes of the party walls belonging to several pre-existing buildings. The two contending works hold a connection in terms of asymmetry rather than imitation.

They invent the city and give shape to the street. As it happened in the project Mina del Morro, the steep slope of the street between the two blocks favours the location and access to garages and business premises, which are also covered with prefabricated concrete.

There was a decision of scale to be made; where to stop the red surface and start with the aligned volumes made of ceramic tiles, whose aim is to disappear on the grey days of the capital city. The grey volumes, which have been changed throughout the process, had that air of a temporary construction suspended at some point. The imbalance of the cornices is partly due to the slopes on the terrain but it is also reminiscent of the division of property in old quarters.
