TC 122/123- Brenac & Gonzalez
Architecture and Situation(s) 2005- 2016
This monograph presents the architectural production of the team of French architects Xavier Gonzalez and Olivier Brenac, between the years 2005 and 2016.
Office founded in 1981, the first thing that draws attention when looking at its production is particularly the progressive liberation, according to the projects, of any dogma in favour of a pragmatic attitude. Their architectural writing has been released free of any belonging or restriction. Without rules, the logic of continuity or rupture obviously loses all interest; there is more transgression than combinatory game. The projects are made of processes whose parameters related to the contexts (sites, clients, program, financing, willingness to experiment or simple mood of the moment) are all determining factors of the aesthetic choices.

"In the randomness of the walks through Paris, in the middle of a dominant Haussmanian continuum, unexpected, some contemporary architectures arise. This is how on Raspail boulevard there is a large white concrete comb that acts as a bridge between the surrounding buildings and the boulevard. It is the Hospitality School Guillaume Tirel. Calle Chevaleret, on the border of the ZAC Paris-Seine-Rive Gauche, there is a succession of brick houses. Its terracotta facades with different tones attract the look. Both are buildings of Brenac & Gonzalez!
From the outside, these constructions stand out for their geometrical volumes, their systems of boxes or windows in raster, without rounded forms. They share the elegance of enjoying their location. Above all, they tell two different stories. (...) Could any of these two buildings portray the Brenac & Gonzalez studio? No, no more than his numerous, multi-faceted realizations, like a Rubik's cube that would not just be a cube!
These two modern ex-youngsters can engage in the rush of fashion and the motifs of the decorative arts. They mix all the influences, Yaacov Agam and Isse Miyake. They experiment with the materials - brick, concrete, glass, metal, stone, wood, zinc - they use all the colours, all the voids for light. They play with abstraction, mono-matter, hybrids, boxes, folding, origami, voids, vegetation, pixelated effects, vibrant reflections. The whole, skin-deep feelings with temperance".
