Plaza del Mar in Sanxenxo
This volume showcases a selection of finalist projects from an international competition held to transform the Plaza del Mar and marina in Sanxenxo — a pivotal location in the city's relationship with its seafront. The publication showcases a variety of architectural approaches, exploring how this strategic space could be transformed into a vibrant urban centre that integrates landscape, social activity, and port infrastructure.
The book showcases proposals from some of the most prominent contemporary architectural studios, including Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos, Estudio Carme Pinós, Tuñón Arquitectos, and Manuel Gallego, offering a diverse perspective on potential strategies for intervention in this distinctive area. Each project is presented with plans, drawings and visualisations, enabling readers to grasp the urban logic and architectural solutions of the proposals.
The winning project, 'Batea en Tierra' (Beach on Land) by Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos, involves transforming the seafront into a continuous public space that connects the city with the port and estuary landscape. Through precise integration of architecture, topography and vegetation, the proposal envisages a new open-air square and viewpoint, conceived as a meeting place for urban life in Sanxenxo.
Beyond presenting the projects, the book reflects on the role of architecture in regenerating contemporary seafronts. The proposals demonstrate how intervention in these spaces can transcend the functional requirements of the port, providing an opportunity to develop the city, strengthen the connection to the landscape, and create new spaces for communal use.
