The radical use of concrete coupled with extreme attention to detail makes Buchner Bründler Architects one of the most up-and-coming architecture firms in Switzerland today. From the shell to the core, from the fireplace to the bathtub and sink, everything is derived from the logic of pouring concrete, whose plastic and atmospheric potential has been well exploited in its short 15-year history.

The reaction to the context is a central motif in their work, either opening up to it unashamedly as in Lofthaus or Bläsiring, or allowing it, in all its complexity, to shape the volumes as in Volta Zentrum. The sensitivity towards materiality is evident in the encounter of concrete with the traditional granite walls in Linescio, or with the dense woods in the youth hostel in St. Alban. The attention paid to the impression of the formwork and the evidence of craftsmanship left by the concreting process are evident in Kahlstrasse and Chienbergreben.

The articles in this issue are also infused with the qualities that characterise the work of Buchner Bründler, from the focus on the essential to the importance of the materiality. The selection showcases the raw beauty of the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, the erosion of the concrete in the pilgrimage church of Neviges in Gottfried Böhm and the reflection on the architectural space of the Rolex Learning Centre of SANAA in Lausanne; these views are accompanied by a reflection on the approach to architectural design from the perspective of effectiveness or efficiency.
