Peris Toral

Marta Peris y José Toral

Peris+Toral Arquitectes is an architecture studio based in Barcelona, founded in 2005 by Marta Peris and José Toral. Since its inception, Peris + Toral's work has focused on researching new ways of living, closely linked to new ways of building, with a special focus on the contemporary challenges of the climate emergency and social housing.

The Peris + Toral studio has developed a solid and consistent track record, particularly recognised for its collective housing and social housing projects, many of which have emerged from public competitions. Works such as Modulus Matrix in Cornellà de Llobregat, Social Atrium in Besòs and Living in Lime in Son Servera (Mallorca) place Peris and Toral among the most important studios in contemporary architecture in Spain and Europe.

In the academic field, Marta Peris, PhD in architecture, is a lecturer at ETSAB, where she defended her doctoral thesis La casa japonesa a través del cine de Yasujiro Ozu (The Japanese House through the Cinema of Yasujiro Ozu) in 2016, later published as La casa de Ozu (Ozu's House). Together with José Toral, associate professor in the Department of Architectural Projects at ETSAB since 2015, they carry out intensive teaching and research work focused on housing, housing typologies and the relationship between architecture, use and perception. Both have taught at institutions such as POLIMI (Milano International Design Studio), ETSALS, IED, UIC and, since 2024, they have jointly directed a Housing Studio as Guest Professors at the EPFL in Lausanne.

The work of Peris + Toral Arquitectes has been widely published and presented at international conferences in cities such as New York, Berlin, London, Vienna, Milan, Mexico City and Buenos Aires, and has been featured in exhibitions at leading institutions such as the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris and the Kunstverein Bielefeld, where the monographic exhibition Peris+Toral Wohnungsbau was held.

The studio's international recognition has been consolidated with awards such as the RIBA International Award 2024 for Modulus Matrix in Cornellà de Llobregat, the DETAIL Prize 2024 and the Erich Mendelsohn Preis 2023, as well as being finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award on several occasions. At the national level, Peris + Toral have received the CSCAE Spanish Architecture Award, the LCA La Casa de la Arquitectura Award, as well as numerous recognitions at the Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (BEAU) and the Ibero-American Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (BIAU).

Today, Peris + Toral, Peris y Toral or Peris i Toral are recognised as one of the key studios in the current debate on social housing, sustainable architecture and construction innovation, with work that combines research, technical precision and social commitment.
