Bak Gordon
Ricardo Bak Gordon | Biography and Works
Ricardo Bak Gordon (Lisbon, 1967) is an internationally renowned Portuguese architect, known for his focus on the integration of place and the creation of intermediate spaces in his works. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1990, complementing his training at the University of Porto and the Polytechnic Institute of Milan.
He founded his own studio, Bak Gordon Arquitetos, in 2002, from where he has developed iconic projects in Portugal and other countries. His work ranges from single-family homes to public and cultural buildings, including the Portuguese Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008 and the National Carriage Museum in Lisbon, in collaboration with Paulo Mendes da Rocha.
His work has been recognised with awards such as the FAD 2011, the BIAU 2012, the BigMat International Architecture Award 2021 and the National Architecture Award FORMA 2022. It has been nominated for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award on three occasions and has represented Portugal at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, 2012 and 2018.
An architectural approach based on essence
Bak Gordon's architecture is defined by the synthesis between discipline and poetics, where conceptual clarity, light and materiality play a key role. His work explores the limits of habitability and intermediate spaces, generating subtle transitions between interior and exterior, between private and public.
With a timeless approach, far removed from passing fads, his projects seek the essence of architecture through proportion, scale and light. This vision has consolidated his studio as one of the most influential in contemporary Portuguese architecture.
