Sol89
Sol89 is an architectural studio founded in Seville. They were the curators of the XVI Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in 2023.
María González (Huelva, 1975) and Juanjo López de la Cruz (Seville, 1974), both graduates of the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Seville in 2000, are the founders of SOL89. This architectural studio, established after their time at L'École d'Architecture de Paris-la Seine and working with Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, stands out for its focus on research, teaching, and professional practice.
At SOL89, they have channeled their talents into projects that explore the reuse of existing structures, urban intermediate spaces, and the public aspect of architecture. This approach has led SOL89 to win numerous national and international awards, including the First Ascer Award, First A+ Award, First Enor Young Architecture Award, FAD Opinion Award, among others, in Spain. Internationally, they have received the Silver Medal of the Fassa Bortolo Award, First Wiener Berger Award, and more, in countries such as Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, and the United States. Additionally, SOL89 has been nominated for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award in 2015 and 2023.
María and Juanjo have also made significant contributions to academia, serving as associate professors in the Projects Department of the School of Architecture of Seville for over seventeen years. They have participated in international academic events and written influential books such as "Proyectos Encontrados" and "El dibujo del mundo", reflecting their focus on reuse and the work of Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn.
In the field of cultural dissemination, they have directed seminars and congresses, notably in the "Acciones Comunes" seminar series on art and architecture and the congress on Jørn Utzon. They have also edited publications like "Acciones Comunes. Urban Views and Interventions from Art and Architecture" and actively participate in blogs such as "Proyectando Leyendo" and "Cuatro Cuadernos".
Recently, María, Juanjo, and Ángel Martínez García-Posada were selected to be the curators of the XVI Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in 2023, further solidifying SOL89's position as a cutting-edge architectural studio.
