TC 131/132- Nieto & Sobejano architecture
Nieto y Sobejano ArquitectosFar from being a simple compilation of works, this issue of TC Cuadernos devoted to Nieto Sobejano offers a cross-cutting reading of their architecture as an evolving system, in which each project acts as a reflection, variation and anticipation of the others.
Through more than twenty works developed between 2004 and 2017, the publication traces a trajectory defined by constant experimentation with geometry, material and memory. Museums, cultural centres and interventions in heritage form a body of work in which architecture is understood not as an isolated object, but as part of an ongoing investigation.
The introductory text, built around the metaphor of the mirror and the stereoscope, reveals three fundamental keys to the practice of the studio. First, reflections, in which projects relate to one another through operations such as repetition, subtraction and superposition, exploring the tension between solid and void. Second, vibrations, which place drawing at the origin of the project, understanding architecture as an open process based on combinatory rules and on the progressive transformation of geometric forms. Finally, echoes address the relationship with memory and context, especially in heritage interventions, where each project is conceived as a graft capable of generating new forms of continuity between past and present.
This way of designing results in an architecture that avoids closed solutions and relies instead on systems capable of adapting, evolving and responding to changing conditions. Buildings that, rather than imposing themselves, establish a dialogue with their surroundings, whether through materiality, scale or the reinterpretation of existing structures.
The whole is presented as a genuine kaleidoscope, in which geometry, memory and invention combine to construct a language of its own. An architecture whose coherence lies not in the repetition of forms, but in the persistence of an attitude: the search for complexity through simplicity, and the constant will to engage in dialogue with what already exists.
