TC 130- Batlle i Roig architecture

Far from being conceived as a simple continuation, this issue of TC Cuadernos devoted to Batlle i Roig Arquitectes expands and redefines the perspective first introduced in TC 91, offering a broader and more complex reading of their practice.

While that first monograph presented the foundations of their work, this new publication reveals its evolution towards an architecture understood as a continuous system, in which the boundaries between building, landscape and infrastructure become increasingly blurred. Through 21 projects developed since 2008, the book highlights a progressive enlargement of scale and a growing ability to operate within complex territorial contexts.

Rather than being organised simply as a succession of works, the publication is structured around fields such as housing and city, facilities and context, education and typology, and work and technology. These categories do not function as isolated compartments, but as different ways of approaching a single concern: the integration of programmes, infrastructures and landscape within coherent systems.

The projects included — from large corporate headquarters to urban interventions and public facilities — reveal a practice that understands architecture as part of broader processes linked to territorial transformation, contemporary production and new ways of inhabiting and working. In this sense, landscape ceases to be a merely scenic element and becomes instead an active infrastructure, capable of articulating relationships between different scales and uses.

This evolution in relation to TC 91 does not imply a change of language, but rather an intensification of Batlle i Roig’s design tools: open systems, combinatory logics, and a constant attention to the relationship between form, programme and context. An architecture defined not by the singularity of its objects, but by its capacity to construct continuity.

The issue thus stands as an essential reading for understanding one of the most relevant practices in the contemporary articulation of architecture, landscape and territory, where each project operates not as an isolated piece, but as part of a structure in permanent transformation.
