EB 40- Assadi + Pulido
Felipe AssadiEn Blanco devotes its issue 40 to the Chilean practice Assadi + Pulido, founded by Felipe Assadi and Francisca Pulido. Trained at the Finis Terrae University and linked to teaching, they belong to the 1990s generation that broke free from the postmodern burden and from the search for a Latin American identity in order to focus, rigorously and without mannerisms, on the discipline itself. Their work uses the density of concrete not to impose itself on the environment, but to sharpen the gaze toward a new approach and redefinition of the territory.
As Anita María Puig points out in the introductory essay “Matter and Place”, their architecture confronts the landscape at the end of the world: faced with immensity, instead of blending in or resting timidly upon the topography, their works confront it with character, through minimalist forms governed by the variables defined by the practice itself — material, structural, economic and spatial — which have allowed them to establish a strong presence on the chosen sites.
The issue covers six works built between 2012 and 2018: Toledo House in Guatemala City, Roel House in Mexico City and, in Chile, Bahía Azul House, the Four-Purpose Pavilion and the Painter’s Studio in Los Vilos — featured on the cover — and H House in Zapallar. The research section brings together four articles: the structural framework as a space for dialogue between architecture and engineering, Giulio de Luca’s terminal station in Porta Nolana, the comparison between the Iberê Camargo Foundation and the National Coach Museum, and Herman Hertzberger’s contribution to the reinforced-concrete frame system.
