Architecture presents an overview of the work of Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, one of the most influential figures of contemporary Latin American architecture and winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2006. Through a selection of projects and critical texts, the issue examines his architecture from the perspective of the relationship between structure, city, and public space.
The projects included illustrate some of the essential characteristics of his work: the expressive use of concrete, the presence of large structural systems that organize space, and a strong commitment to the collective dimension of architecture. Among the works presented are projects such as the National Coach Museum in Lisbon, the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (MuBE), and several buildings in São Paulo that reflect his engagement with the transformation of the urban environment.
The issue is complemented by critical essays that place Mendes da Rocha’s work within the broader context of modern Brazilian architecture and its evolution over recent decades, offering insight into the relevance of his ideas and his influence on later generations of architects.
