13 a cultural reflection that articulates phenomena, facts and intellectual positions that shape a discipline that is constantly constructing itself, or how design is an instrument that allows the disciplinary frontier to be moved through an intellectually reasoned practice accompanied by a theoretical and material positioning. It is pertinent to note that the profile of the architect - so common in Europe - who can write, curate, design, teach and build, is rare. This figure is important precisely because it enlivens the raw architectural “scene” and questions the processes of historical documentation, detached from the usual dogmas of modernism, critical regionalism or the belief that architecture in Colombia, as in almost any part of the global South, is interesting because it is recursive and made with a few resources. It is worth mentioning the lack of interest of the regulatory entities to open other material options through the construction codes, - entities co-opted by civil engineering, and without any participation of architects - where alternative materials are not updated, even traditional ones such as guadua (Guadua angustifolia) or rammed earth, and not to mention new bio-materials. In other words, the normative and regulatory code is late, without any desire to catch up, hindering new technical developments that would help to cover the housing deficit throughout the national territory, or stimulating other aesthetics and ways of living.12 4. PERSONALITY BEFORE IDENTITY. However, and despite a difficult and adverse environment, Colombia has managed to position, maintain and develop a series of characteristics in its architecture that transcend the circumstances of each moment or the absence of cultural or political structures that support the discipline outside the practice itself. Selecting, observing, writing and reading about the architecture of a country and its cultures is, without a doubt, an instrument to think about ourselves differently, as an architect or as a society. We hope it will be so, both for the reader and for the protagonists of this selection, a mirror and portrait of their ambitions, ideals, doubts, fears or convictions, in other words, to read is to read oneself and as Roland Barthes affirms speaking of portraits: “The portrait photo is a palisade of forces. Four imaginaries cross each other, confront each other, deform each other. In front of the lens I am at the same time: the one I believe I am, the one I would like everyone to believe they see, the one the photographer believes I am, and the one he uses to exhibit his art”.13 There are curious and restless architects in Colombia, who, overcoming the difficulties of the context and the system, have managed to come together spontaneously in collective projects and initiatives14 . It is worth mentioning the group formed as a result of the exhibition: Architecture since 1991 by young architects, at the Medellin Museum of Art in 199815 ; or the associations Archipiélago16 and Andina17 . These are small groups outside academic circles, capable of having pertinent and timely discussions, which translate their knowledge into specific projects built by association among some of their members or in the production of some sporadic publications. It is also relevant to mention the capacity for collaboration between generations, allowing the exchange of knowledge and experiences through projects and proposals for competitions.
