11 but it is an architecture that resists being an object, closer to a an object made under the procedures of bricolage, with more personality and character than identity itself, which is perhaps still in the process of consolidation, as this is still an adolescent country and society. The bricolage (tropical) described by Levi-Strauss1 is instrumental in linking it conceptually with Rorty’s pragmatism2 , to frame conceptually an architectural practice that is not entirely exclusive to this area of the globe, that of tropicalism. While bricolage is a process or activity that destroys, deconstructs and reconstructs by collecting the pieces, the leftovers, the discards of other cultures and combining them to create new tools, thus generating other languages; Rorty’s pragmatism proposes that truth is circumstantial although not completely relative but the result of an agreement or convention, where only changes in the lexicon through language - idioms - are the most effective instrument to build a new way of thinking. Is it possible, then, to characterise architecture made in Colombia as pragmatic tropicalism in terms of its language and operation? 2. BACKGROUND. Architecture, with its constructions and disciplinary positioning, and architects, with their ideals and methods, are a vivid and living document of a singular and unique moment. Cities and their buildings are shaped by the society that inhabits them. How to explain to the reader the architecture made in Colombia through a limited selection of buildings and constructions of the last 5 years? The architecture of a society and culture that, in a schizophrenic way, documents little of the past, and that the passion and urgency of the present itself prevents it from acting and thinking beyond the immediacy of the present? How to present - through architecture - a country that finds it difficult to see itself as such, and that in its architectural narrative identifies itself only in a selfreferential way from each of its regions, but each of it is convinced that the architecture of its region is the one that best represents the country? Colombia arrived late to modernity3, it entered slowly through the Magdalena River from the Caribbean coast and through the Pacific Ocean to each of the regions4, driven by a relatively small economy. This delay undoubtedly allowed it to adopt a more mature, but perhaps less experimental, and more conservative modernity. This situation laid the foundations for what would become architecture in the country, a craft architecture, with an important public role, but discontinuous over time, structured over limited constructive and technical material palette: laying bricks or pouring concrete.5 And, with these, the foundation of two schools and theoretical frameworks, well documented and referential to explain the twentieth century in Colombia. The first was headed by Rogelio Salmona, the second by German Samper, both disciples of Le Corbusier, who arrived in Colombia in the 1950s as messengers of a new modernity. In political terms, rurality was ignored, sacrificing the social issues over the ideal of “development”, privileging road infrastructure in the cities or economic development over the human factor, with disastrous repercussions for the country’s equitable social balance.6 The 21st century brought with it new economic processes, new material and spatial influences, almost all of them coming from Spain in 1992, and with them, new views, practices and positions, many of them against what was una arquitectura que se resiste a ser objeto, más cercana a un dispositivo hecho a partir del bricolaje, con más personalidad y carácter que identidad misma, la cual quizás en consolidación, pues es aun un país y sociedad adolescente.
