TC Cuadernos 158 is dedicated to Kengo Kuma and proposes a reading of his work through a central idea: the shift of architecture away from the city towards territory, materiality, and the local. Under the title Architecture 1994–2022: Rural / Neo-rural, the volume traces nearly three decades of work in which the rural condition moves from being a context to becoming a design model.

Rather than approaching the rural as a nostalgic condition, Kuma reinterprets it as a contemporary strategy, grounded in the relationship with place, the use of natural materials, and the dissolution of the architectural object. From this perspective, the concept of “neo-rural” emerges as an evolution capable of operating across diverse contexts while maintaining a light, permeable, and deeply contextual architecture.

Through a selection of projects ranging from small-scale interventions to larger public buildings, the publication reveals a practice that understands architecture as integration rather than imposition, where structure, material, and landscape are interwoven to create precise and sensitive spaces.

With essays, an interview, and extensive graphic documentation, this volume offers a clear insight into an architecture that proposes an alternative to the dominant urban model, particularly relevant in the current context of environmental crisis and shifting ways of inhabiting.
