Out of Plan
This volume, entitled Fuera de plano. La ciudad y su encuadre, brings together a series of essays that explore the relationship between the city, its representation, and what remains beyond the limits of that representation. Through perspectives drawn from architecture, cinema, philosophy and the visual arts, the book proposes a transversal reflection on the ways in which we perceive, interpret and construct urban space.
Starting from the idea that every plan or frame—architectural, photographic or cinematographic—necessarily involves a selection, the publication turns its attention to what remains outside the frame: invisible presences, latent narratives and subjective dimensions of the city that escape conventional representations. From this perspective, the city is understood as a complex territory where memory, experience and perception constantly intertwine.
The different texts included in the volume approach this question from diverse viewpoints. Some examine the capacity of cinema to construct new perceptions of urban space, as in the study devoted to In the City of Sylvia by José Luis Guerin, while others explore the relationships between architecture, cartography, urban walking practices and contemporary cultural expressions. Taken together, the contributions reveal how the city can also be read through what remains hidden or displaced from its conventional representations.
Rather than offering a closed interpretation, the book opens a field of reflection on the multiple ways of observing and understanding the contemporary city. In this sense, Fuera de plano becomes an invitation to reconsider the limits of urban representation and to discover the critical potential of what lies, precisely, outside the frame.
