The Gran Casino Costa Brava is located in the former gardens of the Gran Hotel Monterrey, in the town centre of Lloret de Mar, Girona. It is developed as a complex emerging from the ground, where three different levels are distinguished. The structure breaks through to the surface as a continuation of the gardens of Hotel Monterrey which extend between the Tossa de Mar road and the hotel access road. By virtue of its configuration (largely buried beneath the ground), the casino forms an integral part of the hotel garden. At the same time, it succeeds in revitalising the southern face of the hotel and enriches the urban perimeter by providing a broad zone for recreational use and services.

The building thus presents a striking face to the public thoroughfare while remaining hidden, transformed into an element of the topography, from the vantage point of the hotel garden. The way the casino emerges from beneath its green mantle and opens up to the city reflects the distinct nature of the two sides of the site –private and public– and addresses the difference in elevation between the public thoroughfare and the hotel gardens. The garden area absorbs the visual clash of the architecture development. As an extension of the existing exterior space, the landscaped roof mitigates the visual impact of the architectural complex as well as shielding the hotel from noise pollution from the road.

The building has three highly differentiated levels. The ground floor houses the casino which is arranged in various areas belonging to a sole main hall. This floor boasts areas for amusement machines, a room for games and parties, an exhibition hall, VIP rooms, restaurant, toilets, kitchens, stores and cloakrooms, and administrative and security areas. The first floor is projected over the casino’s entrance which generates a great and deep canopy. On this level is a multipurpose hall used as auditorium, congress centre or local premises, with capacity for 1,000 seats. Furthermore, this level boasts a large outward looking foyer, toilets and management offices. On top of it there is a deck for private use of the hotel and the casino which extends the garden zone thanks to a green area with bushes and local tree species of low maintenance. The following three underground levels are mainly used as a parking site with capacity for 450 spaces, facilities and supply spaces of the casino.

The façades are formed by fractured planes, most of which are black, dyed- in-the-mass, reinforced concrete formworks made of tongued and grooved pinewood splints. The ground plan boasts the multi-purpose hall and is defined by a series of concrete-made broken lines evocative of the terrain structure they occupy. The lines closing the area of the auditorium’s foyer are formed by a wire mesh lattice and a suspended curtain of light fittings shaping a large digital display. They are controlled by a centralised computer system which allows the light effects to be changed according to the casino’s activity. The game room is striking because of its suspended lighting and the golden, diffuse light which comes out of a series of cornices.
