Exorcity Oporto Monumental
Intervening in what already exists is necessary, contemporary, radical and at the same time humble.
It is both a duty and a right, and to exercise them it is essential to understand what the nature of the existing city is and what it means to intervene in it.
Our students dive in a consolidated city with a great heritage load and face a broken consensus about how historical architecture remains so, as long as it keeps its façade and lets literally anything happen inside.
This architecture with almost no rules, offers itself to investors, tourists and extreme consumers, generating a clear dysfunction in the urban fabric to which it belongs.
The projects presented by Monumental Oporto are as varied as the idea of the city itself. They are linked to infrastructures as the last elements to be incorporated into heritage catalogs. Some projects recreate themselves in drawing exercises, devising new types that sew fabrics in apparent collision.
Some others cause surprising situations by overlaying unexpected programs on strongly stereotyped containers. There are some working with the public and there are also some working with the intimate, with the private.
