Nuno Brandao architect, 1970
Nuno Brandão Costa (Porto, 1970) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) in 1994, where he obtained his PhD in 2013 and has been teaching since 1999. He was assistant to Professor Domingos Tavares, Professor Bernardo Ferrão and Professor Pedro Ramalho, and is currently assistant professor, co-regent with Professor João Pedro Serôdio, of Project 4, a curricular unit he has taught since 2001. He was coordinator and professor of the Advanced Studies Course in Architecture Project (EAPA 2014/2015) at FAUP, under the regency of the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura.
Between 1992 and 1993 he did a curricular internship with Herzog & de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland, between 1993 and 1997 he collaborated with José Fernando Gonçalves & Paulo Providência in Porto and in 1998 he started his project practice, following the 1st prize in the public competition for the project of the Library of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon.
His work covers a considerable diversity of scales and programs, highlighting recently, the construction of the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and the rehabilitation and expansion of the São João de Deus neighborhood, both in the city of Porto.
His work was exhibited at the 8th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2004; at the São Paulo Architecture Biennale in 2005; Portugal Now, Cornell University, New York in 2007; Tradition is innovation Tokyo in 2011, at the Milan Architecture Triennale in 2004 and 2014, at the 2nd Chicago Architecture Biennale in 2017 and at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2021.
Author of the exhibition projects of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale in 2007 and 2016.
He was nominated for the Mies Van der Rohe Award, 2008 and 2021, BSI Swiss Architectural Award, 2012 and finalist of the FAD Award, 2017.
He was awarded the Revelation and Merit Award Jornal Expresso / SIC in 2004, the Secil Award in 2008, the Vale da Gândara Award in 2011, the Premio Construir (public building) 2022 and the AICA Award 2021.
Appointed with Sérgio Mah, curator of the Portuguese Official Representation at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale, 2018.
He was a guest lecturer at ETSA of the Universidad de Navarra; Estudio Barozzi University of Girona; EHL International Campus Lausanne; Porto Academy. He was a guest critic at the School of Architecture of the University of Minho (EAUM), Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra (DARQ), École Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (ENAC-EPFL), FAPyD-UNR de Rosario, Università Luav di Venezia (LUAV), Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) Cambridge and ETH (GTA) Zurich.
